Roberto Cavalli targets Delhi’s nouveau riche

Every self respecting LV totting, blinged out Delhi-ite’s wet dreams just came true! Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli has finally opened his flagship store in a posh south Delhi mall. Forget Nando’s this week the place to see and be seen will be at the Emporio mall. Like moths to a flame, every hair straightened harpie will be seen cackling outside the Cavalli store. No longer will Delhi’s nouveau riche have to rely on the US of A or Dubai to get their bling on. Roberto Cavalli’s collection of animal prints and OTT sequence will fly off the shelves within a fortnight.

Roberto Cavalli choosing to launch his store in Delhi isn’t a matter of mere coincidence. It’s the natural progression of things. Not where else will his collection be more appreciated. Not for the average upwardly mobile Delhi-ite the subtleties of say a Givenchy. Understated elegance? What’s that? No siree, its all about the in your face style statement that’s the trademark of the Roberto Cavalli design house.

I suspect in less than no time poor imitations of Cavalli’s designs will start making their way to malls where so called lesser mortals frequent. Read Rajouri Garden, West Delhi.

No one but a Miranda Priestley could have put it better in the ‘The Devil Wears Prada’- “And then it, uh, filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you’re wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room from a pile of stuff.”

So there, the ‘stuff’ lining the shelves of Roberto Cavalli’s store will soon trickle down to bad imitations worn by fashionably cripple girls in the Delhi Metro. Bad fashion is the great leveler in Delhi; whether it’s the birds of paradise in Emporio or birds of prey elsewhere…birds of a feather flock together. Doesn’t matter if its Lajpat Nagar, South Extension or Vasant Kunj… nouveau riche is nouveau riche is nouveau riche.
