Bal Thackeray dies: B’wood gets a new lease of life!

I have been reading endless news articles by various publications talking about how and why Bollywood is mourning Bal Thackeray’s death. Most interesting or should I say funny, are their flashy headlines that read – “Bal Thackeray: Bollywood’s friend, philosopher and guide”, “Bollywood’s love-hate relationship with Bal Thackeray”, “Tributes pour in for Thackeray – Maharashtra orphaned” blah blah…

I am sure Mumbai didn’t make such big hue and cry even after the 26/11 terror attack, then why after Bal Thackeray’s demise? Especially with film fraternity getting a little over emotional and flooding twitter walls expressing sorrow on his death, I’m quite amused. I thought Shiv Sena chief was one of the most hated people in Maharashtra for his anti-take on almost everything that our Bollywood people did. Be it a new film being made on a bold issue or a young hot starlet doing sexy photoshoot, Bal Thackeray never left a stone unturned to make life as complicated for celebs as he possibly could. Then why are getting to see such ‘fake’ expressions of grief from Bollywood stars? A man who always made it a point to become a hindrance in anything new that our Bollywood filmmakers tried doing to take our Hindi cinema to different heights, how can his death be a loss to the industry?

Well, maybe Balasaheb Thackeray played his cards so well with some top notch Bollywood stars that they can’t see anything beyond it and are still showing uncompromised respect to him. He might have gone out the way to lend a helping hand to the stars in their tough times but is that all you need to do to win hearts?

Even worse is when people call Bal Thackeray as Bollywood’s friend, philosopher and guide. Oh please, let’s not become victims of blind hypocrisy just for the sake of it. Bal Thackeray might have earned a stature of a big political icon in his own dirty ways, but when it comes to love, romance, friendship, entertainment, I’m sorry to say but Shiv Sena supreme only played a spoilsport.

It was rather surprising to know that Bal Thackeray’s death affected the Box Office collection of two major big Diwali releases – Son of Sardaar and Jab Tak Hai Jaan. WHY? I wonder why people even bother about a person who never cared about them and served his personal interest in the name of citizen welfare.

It won’t be a surprise if some Bollywood filmmaker wakes up tomorrow and decides to make a film on Bal Thackeray’s life. Huh, I wish they could do something more productive than this. To each his own!
